Leveraging on the success of its previous skills-training program for up and coming young masons, cement company CEMEX recently entered into public-private partnership with a local government unit in Cebu for the implementation of its “Experto Ako” masonry skills training at San Remigio, one of the areas worst-hit by typhoon Yolanda.
The partnership with CEMEX saw 30 men from the community receiving a month-long skills training that offered a comprehensive and multi-faceted approach to professional building. During training, the participants were given lessons and modules on proper cement application and equipment. They also received TESDA-approved workshops on leadership and communication skills.
“The Experto Ako program is a skills training project of CEMEX that aims to help professionalize the rank of stone workers and builders in the construction industry,” explains Chito Maniago, CEMEX Philippines Foundation executive director. “We also see it as a more meaningful way of giving back to the community.”
It is the second time that the company conducted the “Experto Ako!” program in the Visayas region. In May last year, the company carried out the program for community members in Naga, Cebu, home to the company's Apo Cement Plant.
Coinciding the graduation of the masons was the inauguration of CEMEX’s new livelihood training center in San Remigio which is designed to help raise the bar of producing quality competency building programs for residents in the community. The training center is expected to level up the residents’ capabilities in various skills, enabling them to increase their competency and chances of finding better jobs.
According to Maniago, the 30 residents given training in San Remigio compose only the first batch of training participants. After undergoing training, the successful graduates will be asked to help in the company’s bigger project called “Build Unity,” a typhoon rehabilitation initiative to help rebuild houses for families in Northern Cebu.
The “Experto Ako!” masonry skills training program falls under CEMEX’s umbrella Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) program called the “Build the Nation Together.” The program is designed primarily to help address the country’s need for masons who are well equipped to build better homes and buildings.
CEMEX Philippines is a quality building solutions-company and manufacturer of the eco-labeled cement brands in the country including Island Portland Cement, Rizal Portland Super, Rizal Masonry Cement, APO Portland Premium, APO Portland Cement, APO Masonry Cement, Palitada King and APO Pozzolan.
